On providing links/references to songs in answers

I have never referenced a song, and I’m very hesitant to, because not all music is created equal. In fact, I take issue with certain Christian songs they play on the radio, because the theology behind the lyrics isn’t always sound. However, after just submitting an answer to a young woman who was raped and feels unworthy of God’s love, this song really came to mind.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXI0B4iMLuU I tried very hard to convey this message to her through words, verses, and love, but looking back on what I wrote, I would have loved for her to hear this song as well.

I have never given a link to a song, but I know when I work with many young women face to face that music can be a wonderful healing tool – especially when it is filled with scripture and points to Christ. Is it possible to ask for permission from GQ to link to a certain song before we submit an answer – or perhaps permission to reference it? I wouldn’t want to get carried away, but I really think in this case, the song would have added so much more to the message I was trying to convey.

  • Ed Chait and 2 others like this.
  • Gwen Sellers I love this song! And, yes, please feel free to reference it in your response. Any time you have questions about a reference, you are welcome to email us or post to the FB page. In general, if you think a reference is going to be helpful to a questioner and it lines up with our statement of faith, we’re okay with it. When I approve answers and an article or site or book with which I’m not familiar is referenced I usually give it a cursory overview (or at least Google the author) to do a double-check. I sometimes also add a caveat that GQ is not affiliated with that ministry and may not fully endorse everything that ministry does, etc. Thanks so much for asking, Sarah!
