On relating to the Trinity

September 22nd, 2014

September 21, 2014 · Edited

I intend to refer to the Holy Spirit in thought, prayer, and conversation as Counselor or Guide for a while. (John 14:26, John 16:13)

Any thoughts on this or similar experiments by any of you?

Here is my motivation: While I do think of the Holy Spirit as a person of our triune God, I believe the intimacy of my relationship with him is somewhat hindered by his ‘otherness’. And, of the 3, I should have at least as intimate a relationship with my indwelling Counselor as I have with the Father and the Son.

  • Kristi-Joy Matovich I haven’t done anything like this, but I’m quite curious what your experience will be. Thanks for sharing.

  • Alyson Dreyer The Holy Spirit always works to put the spot light on Jesus so I would be curious if he guides you to refocus on Christ and spend less time focused on him. Let us know how it turns out. You could learn a valuable lesson for us all.

  • Lori DeGrazia Very interested to hear how the Holy Spirit directs you. Really appreciate your openness. I don’t know of scripture that instructs us to seek a separate relationship with the Holy Spirit. You’ve got me thinking…we know he speaks what the Father instructs him to speak (John 16:13); he speaks to the Father on our behalf (Romans 8:26); we’re to pray with his guidance (Eph. 6:18)… looking forward to your discovery.
  • Tim White Like Alyson said…. Jesus revealed the Father as the loving Son. The Spirit is the presence of all three in us. The Spirit is called the Spirit of God, the Spirit of Christ, the Spirit of Truth, etc…. within the Kingdom, the interchangeable use of these terms, to me, indicate that the separation of their persons is less encouraged as the the inclusion in our lives as one.

  • Elizabeth DeVore A pastor once loaned me a book (can’t think of the name) that discussed how people often relate to one Person of the Trinity more than the other two. I found it interesting because I’d always “understood” God more than Jesus or the Holy Spirit. I was telling my husband about it and before I could finish he said, “Oh, Jesus. Definitely. I don’t really understand the other two.”

  • Jed Kramer Another thought … is there a hierarchy in the Trinity or complete equality with mutual submission … demonstration of perfect love? Jesus defers to the Father while on Earth. The Holy Spirit puts the spotlight on Jesus asAlyson Dreyer said. A recent question about the Trinity got me thinking …
  • Tim White God shows us through marriage how authority is supposed to work. The authority is to use all its power to honor the submissives, and the submissives obey the authority completely. I am certainly convinced that this is how the Trinity works, too. In the Beginning, the Father designed and said… the Son did the work…. and the Spirit gave it life.

  • Joe Maxey GQ has a good article on this! http://www.gotquestions.org/Trinity-Bible.html

What does the Bible teach about the Trinity? Is the doctrine of the Trinity found in the Bible? How is the trinity not tritheism?
  • Gwen Sellers Beth, I’ve had a similar experience in a class I took. It is interesting to hear how people relate to God differently. And interesting to look at a member of the Trinity with whom we do not naturally relate a little more intently. … Jed, I pray you’ll be abundantly blessed as you seek to know God and relate in a deeper way.
