Is science a pure objective endeavor by truth seeking scientists?
At the heart of many misgivings and mistrust among Christians is the belief that many, if not most, scientists have antipathy if not outright hatred towards Christianity and are working behind the scenes to discredit it. Do such scientists exist? Certainly. And many of them are found particularly in the field of biology. It has become a sad mess when we cannot trust science to take us forward to useful unbiased knowledge. But that is one thing I have enjoyed about my 40 years in the oil business. There is one thing that completely, totally, and absolutely overrides all other motives – profit. All decisions are based directly or indirectly on profit. I have never once seen a business decision made in my workplace that was based on someone’s personal religious views or philosophy. I have never even seen it discussed. Now, one can argue about the right and wrongness of this from the standpoint of capitalism, etc. but one cannot critique this from the standpoint of whether we petroleum scientists are doing underhanded things to discredit Christianity. It just isn’t happening, hasn’t happened, and I can’t see it happening in the future. There is way too much money at stake. The average shallow onshore oil well costs $7 million dollars to drill. Right now ExxonMobil is trying to get a well drilled that is estimated to cost $700 million dollars. That is correct. Getting upwards towards a billion dollars to put a single 7-inch diameter hole in the ground. When I tell you that certain geology is working and makes sense, it is because it has proven itself and has solidly proven itself. Anything that doesn’t prove itself is out the door, along with its promoters. It is a hard business. But it also means that the things I have told you about the kind of geology I do are more than theoretical. They have withstood the most rigorous testing imaginable by people who could care less about the religious implications.
