Discussion on Humbling Oneself

May 5th, 2016

I received a question this weekend that I’ve been thinking about quite bit, even before I received the question…
…”Hello, The bible tells us to humble ourselves. Also, that God gives grace to the humble (not the other way around-that God humbles those who he has given grace). We know we can do nothing (even have faith or soften our hearts [without God’s help]) so how can we humble ourselves?”

Tim White All we can control is choice. Only God can give humility, grace, or any fruit of the Spirit. Our task is simple. It is to choose and trust. Then the supernatural power to produce those is released in us as we walk by faith that God is going to do it.

Jason Finch
Jason Finch I believe the answer is in this verse.

Psalm 37:4 ESV
Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Delight in the Hebrew means to be pliable or to bend in a certain direction. To delight ourselves in the LORD is to bend toward Him. And when we bend toward Him, we begin to think and desire as He desires. Then He will give us the desire to be humble and according to 1 John 3:22 will give us what we ask.

So to simply all that, We submit to God, He then gives us the desire that is in accordance to His desires and will, and He gives us the ability carry out that desire.

Dawn James
Dawn James I would add to that two verses the Lord has put on my heart recently. Prov. 3:5-6 which is similar: Trust in the Lord with all you heart and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths.

Alyson Dreyer
Alyson Dreyer Sounds like they are stuck on total depravity. We can have faith and humble ourselves. We do have the ability to choose.

Dale Agner
Dale Agner Thanks to all for your comments…I do commend the post from Julie (I have condensed the artilcle from the website, regarding humility): 1 Routinely confess your sin to God (Luke 18:9-14).
2 Acknowledge your sin to others (James 3:2, James 5:16).
3 Take wrong patiently (1 Peter 3:8-17).
4 Actively submit to authority…the good and the bad (1 Peter 2:18).
5 Receive correction and feedback from others graciously (Proverbs 10:17, 12:1).
6 Accept a lowly place (Proverbs 25:6,7).
7 Purposely associate with people of lower state than you (Luke 7:36-39).
8 Choose to serve others (Philippians 1:1, 2 Corinthians 4:5, Matthew 23:11).
9 Be quick to forgive (Matthew 18: 21-35).
10 Cultivate a grateful heart (1 Thessalonians 5:18).
11 Purpose to speak well of others (Ephesians 4:31-32).
12 Treat pride as a condition that always necessitates embracing the cross (Luke 9:23).
