Question: Does God have infinite attributes?

Answered by: Eric Ellis, who has been a volunteer with us since November, 2013.

Answer: Hi, and thanks for your thoughtful question.

In light of the biblical fact that God Himself is infinite and eternal, all of His attributes would be infinite and eternal as well.

Here are a couple of passages that affirm this:

Isaiah 57:15 ~ For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite…”

Notice how God, through Isaiah, declares that He “inhabits eternity.” This would clearly state that God is outside of time and the physical creation. Thus, He is infinite.

Numbers 23:19 ~ God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?

Not only is God infinite and eternal, He is unchanging. Whereas our character, maturity and growth do change, God never does. Thus, from this we can rightly surmise that his attributes are infinite and unchanging.

Deuteronomy 32:4 ~ “The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he…”

Lastly, note that this passage declares that God is perfect and without iniquity. Thus, from these passages, we can surmise that God is infinite, unchanging and perfect in all His ways. Thus, all of His attributes are, as well, infinite, unchanging and perfect.

This is one reason that saved, forgiven, heaven-bound individuals will be praising God for ever and ever. Because He is infinite, unchanging and perfect, there will always and forever be reasons to praise Him. We will never cease being amazed at His perfections.

Along with this, it is absolutely shocking that this perfect, infinite and unchanging God would condescend to meet with us and save us from our wickedness in Jesus Christ. Jesus is the perfect display of God’s infinite, perfect and unchanging love.

I hope this is helpful.

Question: What does it mean that love isn`t just an emotion? Why do so many people think it`s just an emotion?

Answered by: Bonnie Gayda, who has been a volunteer with us since August, 2014.

Answer: Hi, certainly there is an element of emotion in love. We experience this with family, friends, those we are most involved with. But God wants something much deeper than this for us. True love is an act of our will. A decision we make in response to what God has commanded us. We are told to love others including our enemies (Mark 12:31; Luke 6:27). Loving those who may cause us harm is not a natural human attribute. But if we have the Holy Spirit of God living within us we are enabled to love as Christ first loved us. We may not feel this love emotionally, but we will act in love. God not only states His love for us but offers us evidence of His love through His actions. Jesus willingly laid down His life for us (John 15:13). If we are believers we have the gift of salvation, forgiveness of sin, grace, the Holy Spirit and the certainty of an eternity spent with Him (2 Corinthians 6:2; Colossians 1:14; Hebrews 4:16; 2 Corinthians 1:22; Ephesians 1:13; 1 John 5:11). The love of God took action on our behalf and we in turn take action to love others. This is a sacrificial love that may include our emotions or not, but it will seek the best for others. It is the love of Christ taking action through us (James 2:15-16). God bless.
