Discussion on ways to do communion

February 26th, 2016

Since I figure MOST of you go to church, I’m looking for any creative ideas you have seen or used in your churches for observing Lord’s Supper? I’m planning some variety in hopes of rekindling the significance of this observance in our church. Thanks!

Brian Marcum
Brian Marcum Perhaps a liturgical approach to corporate confession if you’re Church hasn’t done that before. Or perhaps intinction… or both.

Barbara Ann Reynolds
Barbara Ann Reynolds This is a perfect year (corresponds to the Last Supper, crucifixion and resurrection) to celebrate a Messianic a Passover on Thursday for the entire church. Or have a group like Chosen People, Friends of Israel, or Jews for Jesus (all solid evangelical groups) come in to do a Passover celebration. Until the Council of Nicea Passover and Easter were attached in the early church. The Lords Supper takes on such meaning when we understand its roots. L’shana birushalyim.

MeLissa LeFleur Houdmann
MeLissa LeFleur Houdmann Our church has done family communion a few times. During the service, people gathered into smaller groups (not just family units since not everyone has families) and then someone from the group led the group in communion together. I’d say most groups were 4-6 people.

Tim White
Tim White I asked the people to come forward to take it once because Christianity is not something you do from the pew and have it served to you.

Gwen Sellers
Gwen Sellers My church has done “big communion” in the past where we had rolls and larger cups of juice rather than just the wafer and small thimbles.

Dean Revell
Dean Revell I noticed something as I serve the communion in our church – they re-use the wine ! Any thimbles that arent used are simply poured into a jug and poured back into the container. Allegedly ! I think I will bring my own in future !

Elizabeth DeVore
Elizabeth DeVore Way back in the long ago, when my g-ma did the communion, she’d pour the left-overs into a bigger glass and give it to me to drink.

Ed Chait
Ed Chait Hmmmm, that’s not a good idea at all. Lots of diseases could be transferred that way.

Dean Revell
Dean Revell what with Health & Safety these days, Im suprised !

Ed Chait
Ed Chait Well, I don’t know if there’s any regulation for that, but just common sense should prevail.

Christopher Dupre
Christopher Dupre Don’t know how big your church is, but we stand in a circle, or as close as we can come to one, hold hands and sing, “Amazing Grace” at the end of it.

Heath Tibbetts
Heath Tibbetts Some great ideas! Thanks to everyone so far!

Steve Ray Webb
Steve Ray Webb Communion in New Testament times was a meal rather than a little bit of juice and cracker (e.g. the love feasts in Corinthians). I have hoped to duplicate that at some time. I once knew a small church in Abilene Texas that believed Communion needed to be taken in an ‘upper room’ to be Scriptural. Still another group, known as the one-cuppers’ believed that the juice had to be served in a single cup that all shared. And then there are those who insist that it be wine instead of juice.

Jed Kramer
Jed Kramer Having communion in the morning? Why not bits of English muffins & Juice? When I think of rekindling the significance, I think of re-establishing real meaning that applies to people’s real lives. Making communion more accessible, you could encourage your congregation to have communion meals at home periodically as well…breakfast, lunch, dinner… it’s not about the specific food or drink, but what Jesus did on the cross. Shaking things up forces people to think about meaning again, but messing with such traditions will ruffle someone’s feathers.

Patrick Thompson
Patrick Thompson Likewise, as another writer commented, our church comes forward to get the communion elements and remain up in the front of the church. Usually, my pastor calls upon two men, which is usually myself and one other, to explain the bread and wine and then pray before the church takes each part of the communion. I think it gives us a greater sense of unity and fellowship.
