Discussion on God speaking to us

October 29th, 2015

October 28, 2015

Hello brothers and sisters, I have a question that may be sensitive to some. Often I hear people saying, “the Lord told me…” And “God said…” And every time I hear that it is always in reference to what that person desires or wants to do.

Here’s an example, someone said, that God told him that him and his wife (who was already pregnant) were going to have a son and that they were to name the child a specific name. But low and behold they did not have a son, rather, they had a daughter and named her something else.

I can’t help but to think, that people who claim to get so called “revelation” from God can very much be a dangerous movement and many are falling into it, especially a lot of young immature believers. Now mind you, I don’t discount that God can speak to someone, but I believe good fruit would follow.

What are your thoughts on this?

I don’t understand. This is something that has happened personally here where I live?

MeLissa LeFleur Houdmann
MeLissa LeFleur Houdmann Jason, the question we received is not related to your situation. It was just another person who “heard from God.” Sorry to confuse you.

Jonathan Morales
Jonathan Morales There is a couple at my church who received a so called “revelation from God, by 3 distinct “prophets” that told them that she was going to have a little boy, as she was pregnant at the time. She ended up having a girl. Moral of the story… just because 3 persons said the same thing, doesn’t mean it comes from God.

MeLissa LeFleur Houdmann Here is a blog Shea wrote about this topic. http://www.blogos.org/gotquestions/God-still-speak.php

Does God still speak to us today? Or, since the Bible is perfect and complete, is there no longer…

Deb Whittier Newman
Deb Whittier Newman I had a single friend who said that God told her to sell her house. She was adamant about it. I finally talked her into seeking a pastor, who talked her out of it. His reasoning was that God usually doesn’t give such clear communication unless the situation is dire. I think it’s always good to talk such things over with a pastor or strong, mature Christian. Satan loves to mess with us in our emotions and he had played on my friend’s fear of commitment to her house.

Gina Cook
Gina Cook Yeah Jason I completely agree with you. I see how devastating this can be. I have family and there are members of my church that wholeheartedly believe they get daily revelation from God . Not many speak up agsinst this anymore I find. Another issue sort of related is “Satan is just messing with me today, lost my keys, late for work, had a headache and couldn’t get my project done..or whatever”. Tagging Satan and God on things according to how they see it or how they feel about it.

Gina Cook
Gina Cook Oops mean I completely agree with this concern smile emoticon

Fred Apelquist
Fred Apelquist I believe God speaks to us more often than we think. But I think we can’t discern well when He does and frequently believe He speaks to us when He doesn’t. Ahh, to know which is which.

Tim White OK, if faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen (or heard… sorry for the near KJV wording), why are we being so bombarded by things heard and seen with claims that they are from God? Why would God demand our faith and then send things that erode the heart of it. Our spiritual economy today is that God said it (already) and we believe it, despite what appears to be overwhelming evidence against it. That is my stance and that is where I hope to honor God. I believe what He already said and that is enough.

Blaine Cardilli
Blaine Cardilli Yes…if we open our ears & hearts GOD does speak…He’s spoken to me clearly over the past 2 years but let me clarify my experiences on hearing His “voice”..

Typical for me is a quiet study time during a winter lay-off like last year. No tv or cable;
just Christian radio, my Bible & my notes. One day I was pondering Psalm 84 and it felt like a Psalm that “fit” a hunter’s way of life so I began studying it out but over the course of several days I couldn’t find any good commentary on it so I straight up folded my hands one evening & said, “Father, you know I refuse to twist the scriptures but this really feels like a scripture I could use to communicate with hunters…may I use it for that even tho I know it has some other meaning?” I kid you not…the very next morning as I had all my books laid out on the living room floor, a quiet snow falling outside, and my Christian station on in the other room with my favorite teachers doing their thing, a program started and the preacher said, “Today we’re going to take a look at a particular Psalm and break it down”.. I looked up and thought..”..nahhh”, but then he said “Open your Bibles to Psalm 84”..

The next 30 mins I learned everything I needed to know about what it meant and how it could be applied for us today…and yes, it answered my prayer!! Though I did not hear His “voice” I can confidently say, “God spoke to me about a Psalm I had questions about”.. That’s typical for me & Him.. smile emoticon

And the other way God speaks to me is during times of prayer or sometime after, and sometimes it’s not even a critical issue but while I’m thinking or even talking “thoughts” that cleary aren’t my own will actually interrupt my own pattern and though I don’t hear them I almost “see” them.. Maybe you won’t believe me but it’s true; It’s always subtle but always prominent enough to stop me in my tracks.. That’s when I can say, “The Lord told me today…” It’s caled the “still small voice”…

Blaine Cardilli That doesn’t happen as often as I’d like and it always fits a particular issue or circumstance I’m dealing with….and yes…I know it’s God, (the Holy Spirit within me), because it’s always very short, (sometimes a single word that says volumes to me), and it always feels peaceful when it occurs…reassuring I guess? And the words of Jesus come to mind when He said My sheep know my voice… grin emoticon Gwen Sellers, if you’re reading this, let me know if I’m still on staff will ya? Lol

Steve Ray Webb The Lord has told me to immediately be leery of such people. Some of the worst understanding of biblical passages I have ever heard has come from people who said the Lord toldhavepeople!explicationhavegave them the interpretation.peopleb people! b

Blaine Cardilli
Blaine Cardilli Hey Steve isn’t that an oxymoron? Saying “the Lord told you” to be leery of people who say “the Lord told them”? Good one! Lol

Tim White
Tim White Steve Ray Webb, stop making errors.

Blaine Cardilli
Blaine Cardilli GOD still speaks to us.. He speaks thru His written Word, He sometimes speaks thru circumstances, but He almost always still speaks thru the “inward witness”, (that sense of peace that transcends all understanding when you’ve been meditating in prayer), and He speaks by that “still, small voice”; Great teachers like Charles Stanley have many sermons on the way God speaks to us today.
