Question on Romans 11:25 and the “fullness of the Gentiles”

September 14th, 2015

What do you guys think about this as regards Romans 11:25, particularly the meaning of “fullness”?

  • Robert Lowry I generally concur, except I think that “the fulness of the Gentiles” means that God has an exact number of Gentiles that He will bring to salvation, since the word translated fulness means a “full number” or a “complete number”. At the moment that number is reached, God will send Jesus to rapture the church. At that point, all living Jews will be saved. The Tribulation will follow. I do concur that Romans 11:11 means that we who are Gentiles, through our witness, are to make Jews jealous of what we have that most of them presently do not. I still find that verse one of the most amazing in the Bible.
  • Ed Chait Thank you for your comments, Robert. I believe the main point of the article, however, is that “the fullness of the Gentiles”, due to the Greek word being used, means the maturing of the Church, rather than a specific number of Gentiles being saved.

“has come in” though, at the end of the verse, seems to support a specific number.
  • Robert Lowry Does the church ever really mature though? It doesn’t look much like it is maturing these days. If the churches in Revelation 2 and 3 are representative of today’s churches, not much maturing will ever go on. Only 2 of those 7 churches escaped Jesus’ rebuke.
  • Ed Chait Good point. The author says in the article that this “maturing” of Gentile believers will occur during the Tribulation, but also makes a point as to what our attitude should be towards the Jews now.
  • Lori DeGrazia I first heard this interpretation from Messianic Jew, Sandra Teplinsky, in her book”Why Still Care About Israel?” (highly recommended). You can find her website at lightofzion.org and look for the 9/4/15 blog regarding this subject.
