Help with a Question on Christians wearing skulls

June 16th, 2015

Would appreciate other’s thoughts on this one:

Question:Can Christians wear skulls? clothing, rings etc.

My gut says there is nothing explicitly against it but there’s really no benefit to it either, but I can’t find anything in Scripture to “support” it. The only thing that comes to mind is Leviticus 19:28 but I don’t know if that really applies.

  • Ed Romero and Ed Chait like this.
  • Christopher Dupre Philippians 4:8 comes to mind. I would take the ‘what’s’ best’ approach. Maybe do some research to find out common meanings of the skull motif. It equals death to me, so…are we glorifying death with wearing its symbol?

  • Bob N Kelly Russell As ambassadors of Christ, don’t think it’s the best representation of His likeness. Can you see Jesus walking around with a skull graphic on His robe? wink emoticon

  • Grant McKenzie I also think the questioer should consider whether wearing the skulls would cause a brother or sister to stumble.

  • Bob N Kelly Russell Right…our purpose is to point people to Jesus, & to be holy as He is holy. Gothic dress may be a personal affinity, but not the best way to “put on Jesus” (Romans 13:14). But I will also say, that God uses many things to reach people. He could use a Christ follower (CF) who wears that style clothing to relate to others who are still lost.
  • Gina Cook Skulls are a glorification/symbol of death and darkness. Christians are sons of Light and followers of Life. “Or what fellowship has light with darkness?” Christians can wear skulls, just like Christians can sin or Christians can be wrong about something, but why would they want to? Perhaps put it this way…imagine the skull still having decomposing flesh on it….why would you want to wear it and draw attention to that? That’s basically what a skull is, it’s a dead person’s remains. I would ask them why they would want to wear it and go from there.
  • Bob N Kelly Russell Well…the cross is/was also a symbol of death, but we wear it in jewelry & on clothing too…

  • Gina Cook I understand what you are getting at Bob but I think the cross and a skull and crossbones are completely different. The cross represents sacrifice-dying on the behalf of others which ultimately meant salvation FROM eternal death. Skulls are saying nothing but death.
  • Bob N Kelly Russell They are different for sure…just sharing. To a lost & dying world, they don’t know the difference.smile emoticon Kelly Russell
  • Gina Cook And I agree with you that to the lost, there is no discernment on skulls and the cross and the only way to reach them is with the Word.
