Question on the purpose of Candlelight services

December 11th, 2014

I am working on my next radio program and would like some input from the best Christian writers in the world. Since I don’t have that avenue available to me, I will ask you guys, Questions: What is the purpose we want to achieve in a candlelight service at Christmas? What does it mean to you? What would you want it to accomplish?

  • Sarah Van Baale This may not answer your question completely, but something that really struck me as a child was the imagery of the sanctuary filling with little lights as we lit one another’s candles. It reminded me of the importance of sharing the gospel, the song “This Little Light of Mine,” and how we are the light in a dark world. Those little candles really do light up a dark sanctuary! I know it wasn’t an adult perspective, but from a child’s point of view, it was a great object lesson for me – I don’t think that is what the pastor taught us though. Honestly, I can’t remember what he said, I just liked the lights!
  • Elizabeth DeVore Our goal is always to not burn down the building.
  • Patrick Thompson Aloha my well-spoken brother,
I love Candlelight services, as they should draw us closer to Him, knowing He truly is the “light of the world” We are surrounded by darkness in the world that we live, but the Gospel of John says it best “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it”.
  • Dawn James That’s what I thought of, too. The symbolism of the Light of the world, Jesus, coming into this dark world!
