Question on God using Satan to accomplish His purposes on earth

October 28th, 2014

I would appreciate your thoughts on my latest question assignment: “Does God uses Satan to achieve His purposes here on earth?”

I really don’t know the answer to that one.

  • Nace Howell Absolutely. Read the first couple chapters of the book of Job, then read the last chapters starting with 38 or so. The purpose is basically showing the readers that God is sovereign and in complete control. Therefore, if God used Satan to show Job that God is in control (even though Job had no idea Satan was used), Then it is not wrong for us to think that when bad things happen to us now that God is using Satan to achieve His purposes. Romans 8:28 says “God causes all things to work together for the good of those who love Him.” Does that mean that all things will be good? No. it means that all things (whether bad or good) will become good in the eyes of the Lord (for a believer). If you have Logos, I recommend reading commentaries on the book as well.
  • Michael Reed McKenney A comparison of these 2 verses would indicate a short answer of Yes: John 13:27 Now after the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.” Along with: Acts 2:23 Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death;
  • Jeff Laird When I taught martial arts, I’d demonstrate how an opponent’s attack could be redirected to move them away from me, even cause them damage, while I was safe. I wasn’t the cause of the attack, and all of the effort and energy was on their part. But I intervened to produce a good result out if their evil intentions. A very coarse parallel to God, of course, but it shows how it’s possible to use the “evil one’s” efforts without being the cause of them in the first place.
  • Ambica Kissun Converse Quite challenging but I know that the Lord will give you wisdom and knowledge as how to answer it. You got some good direction from the brethren!
  • Michael Reed McKenney Wendyl, Here’s another passage that sure sounds like God uses Satan to accomplish His purposes here on earth: 1 Cor 5:4-5 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when you are gathered together, along with my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, (5) deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
  • Dwight Payne Satan is the god of this present world, according to 2 Corinthians 4:4, which says, “The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.” To me, that one verse alone shows that God is using Satan for His purposes today because, (reading ahead to the end of the Book) we all know how the story ends!
  • Dwight Payne Jeff Laird, I love your analogy! That’s a really good way to explain it.
  • Dawn James Following up on what Jeff said, Gen. 50:20 where Joseph tells his brothers that God used their evil for their ultimate good. Truly, He is control of everything!
  • Corpuz Valdemor Avellaneda Ramil Definitely. Satan is ONLY an instrument of God to fulfill His purposes. There is no such 2 kingdoms, one is Satan’s and one is God’s. There’s only God’s Kingdom and Satan is one of His servants. Example: the story of Job, Joseph, the crucifixion of Christ etc.
  • John Edward Rasmussen Another example would be the parallel examples in kings and chronicles of David taking the census. Kings says that God incited David to take the census because He was angry with Israel, while chronicles says satan incited David to take the census.
  • Geoff Eachus The answer is yes.The story of Job is a prime example of God using satan to test Job, His purposes here on earth. God uses everything He can to draw us closer to Himself. This includes death, sickness and all the other things that we sometimes get upset about when it happens to us.
  • Sarah Van Baale If He did not, then He wouldn’t be sovereign.
  • Corpuz Valdemor Avellaneda Ramil Without experience of darkness we can’t appreciate light. The darker the darkness the deeper the appreciation of light. The longer the brownout the happier we are when electricity comes back.
