Question: Is Solomon in Hell? 1 Kings 11 says that he worshiped other gods in his old age. Does that mean he is in hell because “His heart had turned away from the Lord” (1 Kings 11:9b).

Answer: Hello, this is a great question.

Solomon’s leadership was both good and bad. He was full of wisdom from God, yet, sadly, he fell into gross idolatry. So, was he saved? I believe the answer is “yes.” I say this because of his writings in the Book of Proverbs, and especially in the Book of Ecclesiastes.

In the Book of Proverbs, Solomon recognized that true wisdom is found in obeying and fearing the LORD (Proverbs 1:7). Moreover, in the Book of Ecclesiastes, there is a sense in which Solomon learned his lesson. He came to the full realization that the pursuit of knowledge and pleasure is ultimately an empty endeavor (Ecclesiastes 1:14; 2:1). Solomon came to see that the ultimate purpose in life is to “fear God and keep His commandments” (Ecclesiastes 12:13).

It might seem strange to think that someone like Solomon was saved. However, we should keep in mind that even the best of men are men at best. Solomon was a man of much gifting and wisdom, yet, at the end of the day, he was a sinner in need of the grace of God like everyone else. It is interesting to note that the Apostle Peter called Lot “righteous.” Lot was a man of much failure and sin. Yet, Peter could rightly call Lot “righteous” because despite his failures, he still desired to please God. Lot was a man of good intentions, but he was influenced by the bad company of those in Sodom (2 Peter 2:7-8).

Solomon’s life (as well as other saints from the bible) should teach us that it is possible for a genuine believer to fall into sin, even severe sin. One of the main messages of the bible is that only God is truly good (Mark 10:18). All of humanity is corrupt, broken and fallen. Our only hope is that our good God will show us mercy by forgiving us of our rebellion. This forgiveness is found in the cross of Jesus Christ (Romans 3:23-24).

I trust this has been helpful.
